Subject

Narrative

Description

This story traces the tumultuous relationship between Rita G. and her love interest Fred. A third character, Rita’s mother, offers commentary (often negative in tone) on the relationship throughout the story as well. This particular narrative reveals beauty standards for women especially in relation to what bodies deserve love and what bodies do not deserve it. Furthermore, it promotes the cession of female body agency in favor of increased attention from men. This patriarchal approach to love and relationships remains prevalent throughout many narratives in the True Confessions publication.
