Rearticulating his own Canon

Across Webster's texts he strategizes to both improve upon his work to stay relevant, and also reinforce his own authority as the keeper of American standardization. The Under-Lip struck me as a site for a cross-event linkage as it similarly exploits the body as a surface to create subjective meaning. This was published prior to the American spelling book and while the Under-Lip does not necessarily have the gender subversion, this can be seen to have been developed across time. While it initially served as a site for a different purpose, it is now seen in the American spelling book how this is specifically done in terms of gender. The body is a place to put meaning onto, and as it develops into the American spelling book, Webster articulates a relationship like this to woman's bodies alone.
