Description
The Environment Council (EC), chaired by Professor of Religion Steven C. Rockefeller, produces a report that may be regarded as the watershed moment in the development of the Middelbury campus as a sustainable one.
The report has co-authored by ten subcommittees formed by the EC, and the areas they covered include: Administration and Business Management, Environmental Council, Environmental Coordinator, College Publications, Community Awareness and Education, Energy and Water Conservation, Dining Services and Food, Land Stewardship, Toxics and Pollution, Waste Minimization, and finally, Pedestrian Campus Proposal.
Also, the proposed Environmental Mission Statement found in this document is still used until this day, even though the objectives as stated in this document have been radically changed and expanded ever since, with one glaring omission: the commitment in 1995 to consider long-term as well as short-term environmental consequences when making financial investments, though the Objectives as they stand now do incorporate concepts such as "ecological resilience," "economic prosperity," and "social equity" into the assessment of the College's economic performance.
