An account of the resource
Feminist Action at Middlebury, commonly referred to as FAM, has existed since the early 90’s when it was called the Coalition for Feminist Consciousness (CFC). After the DU mannequin incident of 1988, there was a surge of feminist activism in which The Coalition for Women/FAM was created. FAM’s mission is to explore and question the construction of gender and gender stereotypes and how they relate to gender-based violence, as well as address and explore a variety of issues relating to various feminisms. FAM continues to be present on campus today and has worked closely with Chellis House since the house opened in 1993. Over the years, FAM has engaged in comprehensive feminist activism on topics ranging from menstrual and reproductive justice, anti-sexual assault activism, and body positivity, to school, local, state, and national politics, and advocacy for trans rights and womxn of color.

The Addison County Action Forum was an event organized by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, the branch of PP that FAM works closely with. The event was held at the Marquis Theatre on January 20, 2020. The goal of this event was to bring residents of Addison County together to learn about and organize around Prop 5. Prop 5 is a proposed VT state constitutional amendment, in response to federal Title X funding cuts, that would ensure reproductive liberty is an unalienable right for Vermonters. The event also served as an opportunity for Middlebury students to meet community members interested in reproductive justice and organizing. From this meeting, students and town members decided to work together to bring Prop 5 to the upcoming town hall meeting in the spring. This is the poster for the Action Forum and a Planned Parenthood Proposition 5 handout.

This Campus article discusses Vermont's Title X funding. In August of 2019, the Trump administration published new Title X funding stipulations in a move to severely limit access to abortion care. This article includes information about FAM's involvement with the Title X cuts, and their activism in support of Vermont's Proposition 5, an amendment to the State Constitution that is being deliberated in the Vermont Legislature. If passed, Prop 5 would guarantee that reproductive liberty is an unalienable right for Vermonters.
