Description
An account of the resource
Founded in 2011 by Margo Cramer '12 and Luke Carroll Brown '13.5, It Happens Here (IHH) is a student-run sexual assault awareness and prevention group at Middlebury College. Once or twice a year since then, IHH puts on storytelling events, where students can submit personal stories of sexual assault and then have them read aloud to an audience (they may choose to read the stories themselves or remain anonymous and have another student read them). IHH has also conducted the "Map Project" in 2013 and 2019, where students can submit locations on campus that they've experienced sexual assault or harassment, and IHH plots red dots onto a map of campus, each one representing a student's submission. IHH sparked organizations of the same name at other colleges and universities, and received press attention.

You can visit their website at www.ihhmidd.org.

Title
A name given to the resource

Delta Upsilon, 1988

Description
An account of the resource
Middlebury made national news on May 7-8, 1988, when Delta Upsilon hung a “mutilated” female mannequin with "Random Hole" scrawled on it from their balcony. The Women’s Union and other members of the community protested. As a result, DU was suspended for one year by the college. In 1990, single-sex organizations were banned from Middlebury. In the aftermath, a surge of pre-existing student activism resulted in the eventual establishment of Chellis House (the Women’s Resource Center), the major in Women’s Studies, and a student group called Feminist Action at Middlebury (then called The Coalition for Women). After the DU incident, President Olin Robinson appointed the Committee on Attitudes Towards Gender and tasked them with "[developing] recommendations as to how the College community should continue in future years to educate people about attitudes towards gender." The committee's report, published in 1990, marked the college's first "attempt at self-evaluation on these issues."
